A Weekend In New Bern

Share It:

One of the nice things about my parents living in North Carolina is that they are only about 3 hours away. Far enough that going to visit is like a mini-break of sorts. Not too close, not too far. As the 3 bears would say....juuuuust right!

When they first moved to New Bern, my sister and I were wondering what on earth made them move to the country?! Before that they lived in Annapolis, MD and if you've ever been there, you know that it's crazy congested and only 45 minutes from D.C. Yet, the closer we got to their new town, the more more realized why they decided to retire here.

It's the perfect small town that pretty much gives you everything you could need. It's on the water, has a thriving downtown district, there's plenty to do, good shopping, a historic district and only about 30 minutes from the famed, North Carolina beaches! It's been about 8 years since they relocated here and each time I visit I think "I could totally live here."

About 2 weeks ago, my Mom invited Katie and I to come enjoy the Historic Homes & Garden Tour with her! It was a great day with so many beautiful homes and gardens to see. For me, the highlight of the tour was my first viewing of Tryon Palace and the grounds. So beautiful! If you are ever in New Bern, please try to take an hour or two and walk through the gardens...you won't regret it! Till then though, enjoy these shots from that perfect, Carolina blue skies day......

What I'm Listening To // Echosmith

"I think the universe is on my side... Heaven and Earth have finally aligned... Days are good and that's the way it should be.  You sprinkle star dust on my pillow case... It's like a moonbeam brushed across my face... Nights are good and that's the way it should be. You make me sing oh, la, la, La... You make a girl go oh oh I'm in love, love"

A Song, A Book, A Quotes, A Look

Share It:

Happy Sunday!! It's so beautiful outside today...I can't stand it! I'm going to post this and then heading out into the warmth and sunshine:) Life is good.... Work is challenging as always and I'm keeping super busy. I've been tackling my health the past few weeks and I think I might be turning the corner. My blood pressure was dangerously high and with the help of some medication, it's come down almost 40 points in just 2.5 weeks! Amazing! Next up is taking my weigh head on over the next 12 months. If I'm unable to lose at least 75 lbs by next June, I'm going to look into plan B. I'll elaborate more on that later.... ;)

For this installment of SBQL, I'm channeling my boho look, creative dreaming, country music and the purple prince;)

:: Song :: 80's Mercedes by Maren Morris
:: Book :: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert
:: Quote :: Lyrics from Kiss by Prince
:: Look :: Denim, over-sized sweaters and leather sandals

Something strange happened about 3 weeks ago. I started listening to country music. Like, every day. Our news cycle is 24/7 and honestly, quite depressing. Then I would turn on popular, current radio and the music just left me.....stressed. So, I popped over to the XM Sirius station The Highway one day and it's been like a breath of fresh air. New music, new artists and the music is generally light, airy and sometimes playful. Just what the doctor ordered:)

Elizabeth Gilbert is one of my favorite writers. "Eat, Pray, Love" is just so good that I new after seeing several positive reviews, that her newest prose would be great! This book is about finding your creative center and reaching for the stars. As a bonafide creative....it's speaking to me on so many levels. I'm slowing getting into it....a few pages each nite. Savoring everything that she has to offer....such a great read:)

Prince. What more can I say other than I'm so, so sad that he passed. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and listened to him a lot. I always liked him but it wasn't until my later, more adult years that I really started to appreciate his music and the genius musician that he is. There was a fragility and boldness in him....a sort of ying and yang that co-existed in this tiny being. There won't be anyone like him for a long while, and I think that's the way it should be.

Jeans and sandals. I think that's going to be my uniform this entire summer. I decided this spring that comfort was the key to dressing during the warmer seasons. I won't be buying anything that super structured or tight. It gets crazzzzyyyyy hot and humid her in coastal VA and I'm not going to fight it this year. Right now, we're getting some warm days and then cool nights....so the sweaters are coming in very handy!

Thanks for stopping by today....I hope this coming week is everything you want it to be! I'm heading out to visit my sister and take her out for a belated birthday lunch....shrimp tacos and margaritas!!!!

Stay Blessed,
Jenn

Jammers, Spaghetti & The Beach. A Weekend Recap.

Share It:

Happy Monday!! I just filed my taxes (I know...don't judge me;) and I'm watching The Voice. Thought I'd keep up with the posting and pop in to recap my weekend. Because, I know you totally care what I did!

Saturday was a blur. In that I didn't get out of my jammers the entire day, watched copious amounts of television and drank too much soda:( I did buy some flowers for the house, made homemade mushroom spaghetti and vacuumed....but not much else! It was glorious. But by Sunday morning I felt completely guilty for my slothy ways and I headed out into the sunshine!

One of the blessings of living in this area of VA is that I'm only 25 minutes from the oceanfront. I totally take that for granted most of the time, and this summer I've made a promise to myself to get down there more. It was chilly by the water and crazy windy. But I was only one of maybe 5 people on the entire beach and it was so relaxing! I took a few iPhone snaps and you can see from the pics that the sky was a perfect blue and the sand was perfectly warm and gritty! Probably one of my favorite place to just.....BE.

I hope if you live near the sea, you have plans to visit and enjoy it this summer season! And I hope you have a great week ahead!

Stay Blessed,
Jenn

I Could Drink A Case Of You.....

Share It:

Every time I looked at my computer the past 2 months....I thought "open it up and do something creative!" Every time I looked at my camera, I thought the same thing. But sometimes you just have to step back and let what will be.....be. I don't believe in pushing your creativity. If it's there it's there...if it isn't, that's okay. There are times in this journey where we have to listen to our inner voice and not just put something out there for the sake of posting.

There are so many platforms for "posting". Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snap Chat..... It's exhausting quite frankly. I got to the point sometime at the end of January where I found myself getting twitchy at the end of the day because I hadn't posted anything that day. And it felt like an obligation. Isn't that just insane??? When did our lives become so incredibly attached to technology? It scares me at times....and I have to make a real effort to not get lost in it all.

But with the spring sun and warmth has come a sort of "re-awakening" of my creative soul. I've been regular on Instagram through it all....but in regard to my SLR, I took a bit of a break. I've picked her up a few times since January and documented a couple of outings. I hope to share those with you over the coming weeks! My plan tomorrow is to get outside and capture the charming little village I live in here..... The weather is beautiful and I'm feeling positive for the first time in awhile:)

During this hiatus I've been listening to a lot of music. Some new (hello, country!! What?!?!) and some old. I've also been making a lot of smoothies in the morning...it's the easiest way for me to get a morning meal and fruit incorporated into my day. I'm sharing some pics of my home-made Dole Whips that give me liiiiiiiiiife! So refreshing and filling. Yet so simple...which is good if you're like me and like to hit the snooze button 50 million times and are rushing out the door to just make it to work on time. Yeah....I have a problem with mornings:) I excel at afternoons!!!! I'm also posting an oldie song by a newer artist. I've always loved Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of You" and this version by James Blake is just lovely. Enjoy!!

Dole Whips

Ingredients:

2 Cups fresh pineapple. (I use frozen!)
1/4 Cup Almond Milk
1 tsp Lemon juice
1/2 Cup Cool Whip
Sweetener of your choosing
*sometimes I will add a scoop of vanilla protein powder to give it extra healthy vibes:)

Combine above ingredients in blender and serve with an extra dollop of cool which on top. Enjoy!!
